Infrasound station IS09 monitors very-low-frequency sound in the atmosphere as part of a "global alarm system" for detecting nuclear test explosions. Installed in 2001, the station is an irregularly-spaced array of four sensor elements (H1-H4) located within 2.5 km of each other. Data from the array is transmitted to a central processing facility at the University of Brasilia, 20 km away.
Element H2 (latitude -15.6280, longitude -48.0199) is hidden in a forest of high trees; the other three array sites are more in the open.
