This was the site of Albrecht's Saloon (a.k.a. the "European Hotel"), a historic saloon and liquor store. It was originally built circa 1885 by Edward P. Creighton, who sold it to Carl F. Albrecht before going on to build the Arcade Saloon. Albrecht continued to operate it until circa 1915.
It is best remembered today for a sign painted on the side of the building, which sardonically advertised "barley water and bad cigars".
