Stapleton International Airport was Denver, Colorado's primary airport from 1929 to 1995. At different times it served as a hub for TWA, People Express, Frontier Airlines and Western Airlines, as well as a hub for Continental Airlines and United Airlines. The airport was known as Denver Municipal Airport until 1944.

Before Denver International Airport (DEN/KDEN) was constructed, all commercial flights used Stapleton International Airport, which was named in honor of Benjamin F. Stapleton. Noise pollution and complaints from nearby neighborhoods forced the building of Denver International Airport. Stapleton closed in 1995, which was followed immediately by the opening of Denver International Airport. Stapleton's FAA LID, ICAO, AND IATA identifiers were inherited by the new facility.
