Now a gym called originally enough 'The Gym', the building was originally St. Matthews Swimming Baths which was opened in 1924 providing both swimming baths and communal slipper baths. When it was built many of the surrounding residences didn't have their own bathrooms or baths.
The building also served as a public hall for a time after the main public hall (Situated where Primark now stands) burnt down.
