On 10 August 2024, Israel struck the Al-Tabaeen school located in eastern Gaza City, which was hosting displaced Palestinians seeking shelter there during the Gaza war. According to Palestinian health authorities, 80 Palestinians were killed and 47 others were injured. The IDF claimed that the school was being used as a "Hamas headquarters".
