This used to be a landfill site - a rubbish dump - converted to public sports facilities after the second world war. It's rumoured that the Ministry of Defence dumped a large number of vehicles under here before it was closed over - could be interesting for future archaeologists... -Copied from now deleted place created by anonymous guest c2006.

Public open space with children's playgrounds, football pitches, basketball court, skateboard park, wildflower meadow and open grassland. Awarded Queen Elizabeth II Field status in 2012 by Fields in Trust.

  • I believe this used to be a quarry, which then became a 'refuse tip' (landfill). The council arent aware of any specific details other than it was a landfill. The topography suggests it may be between 3 and 10m deep. Does anyone know any details?

Gillian Lawrence (guest) It was indeed a rubbish tip having been known as "The Dump" certainly from 1950-1960.My sisters and I used to play over there. There was a football field which my sister used to run around whilst I stayed by the giant teasels. We didn't like to go near the dump as it was always smoking with dump fires on discarded coal! There were old pig sties further towards the crematorium chimney and apple trees which we scrumped. Logs of wood as in tree trunks used to be dumped there too so dad used to chop firewood. -Comment date Dec 2013 copied from now deleted duplicate place. Arb
