Goalanda ghat Upazila (Rajbari district) with an area of 149.03 sq km, is bounded by Bera and Shivalaya upazilas on the north, Faridpur sadar and Rajbari sadar upazilas on the south, Shivalaya and Harirampur upazilas on the east, Rajbari Sadar upazila on the west.
The location of the Goalanda ghat town is 23.7300897N 89.7594997E. Goalanda (Town) consists of 9 wards and 45 mahallas. The town has an area of 4.53 sq km and a population of 32102; male 54.27% and female 45.73%. The rate of literacy is 38%. Goalanda ferry terminal is an important river port that connects the south-western regions of the country with Dhaka.
Goalanda ghat thana was established in 1920 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 4 union parishads, 113 mouzas and 207 villages.
As of the 1991 Bangladesh census: Population 91675; male 52.1% and female 47.9%; Muslim 93.49%, Hindu 6.17% and others 0.34%.
Religious institutions: Mosque 80, temple 3, graveyard 12, cremation site 5.
Literacy and educational institutions: Average literacy 23.5%; male 27.4%, female 13%. Educational institutions: college 2, secondary school 5, primary school 37, madrasa 17, non-formal education centre 85.
Cultural organisations: Public library 2, shilpakala academy 1, cinema hall 2, press club 1, club 18, theatre group 2, women's organisation 2.
Main occupations: Agriculture 35.14%, fishing 1.07%, agricultural labourer 20.52%, wage labourer 4.95%, commerce 15.91%, service 9.51%, transport 3.28%, industry and construction 1.33% others 8.29%
Land use: Cultivable land 8215 hectares; fallow land 3917 hectares; single crop 41.6%, double crop 37.7%, treble crop 20.7%.
Land control: Among the peasant 33.4% are landless, 29% small, 25.6% medium, 12% rich; cultivable land per capita 0.08 hectare.
