Nagarkanda Upazila (Faridpur district) with an area of 379.02 sq km, is bounded by Faridpur sadar and char Bhadrasan upazilas on the north, Muksudpur and Boalmari upazilas on the south, Bhanga and Sadarpur upazilas on the east, Char Bhadrasan upazila on the northeast and Boalmari upazila on the west. Main rivers are Old Kumar, Bhubaneshwar and Shitalakshya.
The location of Nagarkanda town is 23.4201473N 89.8937304E. Nagarkanda (Town) consists of 9 wards and 12 mahallas. The area of the town is 8.15 sq km. It has a population of 9684; male 51.95%, female 48.05%. The density of population is 1188 per sq km. The literacy rate among the town people is 35.9%.
Nagarkanda thana, now an upazila, was established in 1906. The upazila consists of 17 union parishads, 239 mouzas and 335 villages.
As of the 1991 Bangladesh census: Population 267193; male 50.18%, female 49.82%; Muslim 89.71%; Hindu 10.25% and others 0.04%.
Literacy and educational institutions: Average literacy 22.6%, male 29.4% and female 17.5%. Educational institutions: college 2, high school 17, government primary school 93, non-government primary school 29.
Cultural organisation: Club 250, public library 1, cinema hall 1, drama stage 1 and theatre group 1.
Religious institutions: Mosque 577, temple 75 and tomb 2.
Main occupations: Agriculture 53%, fishing 1.61%, agricultural labourer 24.4%, wage labourer 1.74%, commerce 6.56%, hawker 1.06%, service 3.5%, others 8.13%.
Land use: Cultivable land 92%; single crop 30%, double crop 60% and treble crop 10%; land under irrigation 80%.
Land control: Among the peasants 35% are landless, 30% small, 25% intermediate and 10% rich ; cultivable land per family 0.50 hectare.
