In 2010, Phoenix Arizona based Cyprus Amax Minerals purchased the former Satralloy refinery site from Jefferson County for back taxes. Originally constructed in 1957, the 333 ac. plant was used for smelting chromium. Closed in 1982, the site has long been an environmental concern. The buildings contain asbestos and the 50 ac. chromium waste pile contains elements of cancer causing hexavalent chromium.
Cyprus Amax was connected to the original owner and has agreed to tear down the buildings and rehabilitate the site.
