Large bay that was once extremly well protected by barrier island across its mouth. The Tsunami of December 2004 essentially destroyed the barrier. All reported deaths on the African coast of the Indian Ocean happened in the vicinity of this bay. It once was the sight of the worlds largest salt works built by the Italians when this area was a part of Italian Somaliland. The western shore of the bay has an extremly shallow grade that forms a large tidal flat at low tide. This makes the bay an ideal site for a salt works.
