Hatiya Upazila (Noakhali district) with an area of 1508.23 sq km, is bounded by Noakhali sadar and Ramgati upazilas on the north, bay of Bengal on the south and the east, Manpura upazila on the west. This upazila consists many big and small offshore islands.
The location of the Hatiya town is 22.2873354N 91.1398965E. Hatiya (Town) consists of three mouzas. It has an area of 25.72 sq km. The town has a population of 8085; male 49.93%, female 50.07%; population density per sq km 314. Literacy rate among the town people is 25.2%.
Hatiya thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. The Upazila consists of 10 unions, 37 mouzas and 69 villages.
As of the 1991 bangladesh census: Population 295501; male 50.73%, female 49.23%; Muslim 87.16%, Hindu 12.31%, Buddhist 0.16% and others 0.37%; population density per sq km 196.
Religious institutions: Mosque 410, temple 14.
Literacy and educational institutions: Average literacy 21%; male 27.2% and female 14.7%. Educational institutions: government college 1, non-government college 2, government high school 2, non-government high school 23, madrasa 16, government primary school 105, non-government primary school 117.
Cultural organisations: Rural club 29, cinema hall 1, playground 22.
Main occupations: Agriculture 38.65%, agricultural labourer 24.23%, wage labourer 3.77%, commerce 8.69%, service 3.58%, fishing 5.37% and others 15.71%.
Land use: Total cultivable land 28396.2 hectares; fallow land 2815.46 hectares; single land 38%, double crop 46% and treble crop land 16%; cultivable land under irrigation 75%.
Land control: Among the peasants, 52.13% are landless, 18% small, 22% intermediate and 7.87% rich; cultivable land per head 0.09 hectare
