525 Madison Avenue (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / Madison Avenue, 525
store / shop, commercial building, Colonial Revival (architecture)

5-story Neo-Colonial style commercial building completed in 1926 for Schmitt Bros. who specialized in dealing in English antique furniture. Designed by Schwartz & Gross, it is clad in red brick with limestone trim. The ground floor is slightly recessed between the end piers, and has red-painted, wood-and-glass double-doors at the center, under a rounded, red canvas canopy. To either side are display-windows that project out to the building line, and small, recessed wooden doors at the ends.

The upper floors have four bays of 3-over-3 windows with white wooden framing, flanked by grey stone panels simulating exterior shutters. The windows are all topped by small, sloped, red canvas awnings, above which are splayed brick lintels with limestone keystones. The 2nd & 3rd floors are separated by a projecting stone band course, and a flat band course divides the 3rd & 4th floors. The top, attic floor is fronted by a large triangular pediment of brick, bordered by white modillioned cornices. Behind it is a copper mansard roof topped by a metal railings.

The building was previously occupied by Talbot's women's clothing.
