The collection was housed in the former Methodist chapel. The chapel was built between 1867 and 1871, in the Corinthian style. In 1963, the building was taken over by the London Drama School, which pioneered the Russian branch of method acting in the UK. After The London Drama Centre moved to new premises the building fell into disrepair and was purchased by the Zabludowicz Collection in 2005. It opened to the public in September 2007 as the London home of the Zabludowicz Collection.

The collection was founded in 1994 by Poju and Anita Zabludowicz. The collection exhibits and supports arts organisations and artists around the world. The exhibits are in venues in the UK, USA and Finland.
