brownfield land
Add category

The J-Pit is a large brownfield in Gary, originally a 152-acre sand mine. Lake County once intended to use it as a county landfill site, but the City of Gary sued the county and was given the land. Today it remains undeveloped despite plans to reclaim the lead-poisoned land.
