Virupaksha temple, built during Vijayanagara rule is surrounded by fort walls. Originally the fort had seven rounds. Now only first two rings can be seen and ruins of the third ring can be seen on the village outskirts. The temple has 3 level Gopura, a Kalyani and a Kalyan Mantap.

The temple's Garbhagriha facing the East has two Lingas, not side by side but one behind the other. The Linga in the front is the Atma Linga. Besides Gokarna, Virupaksha temple near Mulbagal is the other temple with Atma Linga.

About 6 kms of Virupaksha is Avani, the birth place of Rama's sons Lava and Kusha. Avani is known for Seetadevi temple on the rock hill. Avani is also known for Ramlingeswara group of temples.
