The City Club Hotel (New York City, New York)

9-story Neo-Georgian hotel completed in 1904. Designed by Lord & Hewlett as a clubhouse for City Club of New York, it was converted in 1939 to an office building and headquarters for the American Plywood Association, and then renovated into a hotel in 2001. The old City Club premises provided a non-partisan atmosphere where Democrats and Republicans would convene to discuss politics of the day. The current City Club is housed on West 67th Street.

The 3-bay facade is clad in red brick above a limestone base. The hotel entrance is at the east end; to the west are a plate-glass show-window, the entrance to the hotel restaurant (DB Bistro Moderne), and a metal service door at the west end. The transitional 2nd floor has broad stone surrounds at the recessed, square windows, with keystones, Large stylized brackets on each pier (paired at the ends) support a stone balcony and balustrade at the 3rd floor.

The 3rd floor has three large, double-height round-arches with scrolled limestone keystones. The 5th-7th floors have square, recessed window openings with flat limestone keystones and projecting stone sills; those on the 5th floor have stylized brackets. The 8th floor has broad stone surrounds at the deeply-recessed window openings; in between each bay the piers have elaborate stone ornament, including triglyphs and garlands. At the end piers there are oversized pedestal brackets with eagles perched atop them. The 8th floor is crowned by an egg-and-dart molding and modillioned cornice. The top floor is set back with piers and a pergola fronting a terrace. The hotel contains 65 guest rooms.
