 ruins, archaeological site

Ancient capital of the Saffarid dynasty. The site consisted of massive fortification walls enclosing an irregular area of remains. The area is covered in alluvial deposit except for where mounds and ruins survive. These include a citadel, a madrasa of part baked brick construction, a Friday Mosque, a bazaar, four gateways, the mound of Safid Dagh and the mound of Surkh Dagh, where excavations have revealed the remains of an Iron Age "massive monument" of uncertain function.
