154-foot, 12-story Beaux-Arts/Second Empire-style hotel originally completed in 1901. Designed by Buchman & Fox, it opened as the 10-story Hotel Patterson. In 1902, an annex on the south side of the block was built by the same architects, fronting 46th Street, following a disastrous collapse of a previous building project on the 46th-Street site a year earlier. In 1907 the Patterson Hotel declared bankruptcy. A year later the Langham Realty Company leased the newer portion to the Forty-sixth Street Hotel Company as a separate hotel, taking the Patterson name. By 1913 the Hotel Patterson had become the Hotel Wentworth. In 1923 the Wentworth and the old Patterson on West 47th Street were once again united, known as the Hotel Wentworth-Patterson, with the main entrance now on 46th Street.
The aging hotel was sold in 1942. By 1947 the Scandinavian Travel Bureau took up space on the ground floor and a decade later it was home to Norse House, a retail outlet for ski wear. In the late 1900s, the building was renovated as a Super 8 hotel, and shortly after 2000, was rebranded and now operates as The Hotel @ Times Square.
The taller, 3-bay south facade is clad in limestone and red brick. The 2-story base is rusticated stone, with a central entrance covered by a modern black metal canopy, and a small, grey granite storefront in the east bay. Above the entrance is a cornice and small stone balcony with ornate iron railings between sloping, carved, stone end blocks. The 2nd & 3rd floors have tripartite windows in each bay, with brown iron mullions. The 2nd floor is topped by a broad, modillioned stone cornice carried by four pairs of scrolled brackets with hanging pendants. The transitional 3rd floor has alternating bands of stone and red brick on the piers, and stone enframements around the windows. A stone band course sets off the mid-section of the building.
The 4th-7th floors have projecting tripartite bays between the brick piers, framed in brown metal, with angled side panes. Between each projecting bay is a projecting stone spandrel with diamond shapes within rectangular panels, while the 4th floor also has triangular pediments in the middle panel, covering a cartouche. The 8th floor has non-projecting tripartite windows, with the projection below creating balconies fronted by wrought-iron railings. These bays end in stone segmental-arches.
The 9th floor is faced in limestone, with three recessed windows in each bay. The piers are overlayed by fluted panels topped by console brackets that support a broad stone cornice with large modillions; a metal railing tops the cornice. The 10th & 11th floors have similar windows, bit with red brick overlays on the piers, and fluted columns between the windows on the 11th floor. This floor is topped by a frieze lined with roundels. The top floor has a steep mansard roof with three dormers topped by triangular pediments. The ground-floor storefront is occupied by Exchange 58 jewelers.
The 10-story north facade on 47th Street is constructed of similar materials. The 2-story base of rusticated limestone has seen the ground floor renovated with modernized storefronts of metal, granite, and glass. The tops of the piers at the 2nd floor have paired scrolled brackets carrying a stone, balustraded balcony at the 3rd floor. The 3rd-floor windows have stone surrounds, surmounted by cartouches and rounded pediments; the piers are banded with red brick. The floors above have stone quoins at the edges of the three window bays, each with a double-window divided by a black metal mullion. The spandrels above the 4th floor have smaller cartouches, while the rest have keystones (scrolled above the segmental-arched openings of the 7th floor).
A band course sets off the crown of the building, with banded stone piers at the 8th floor, and stone pilasters separating the paired windows. Four large brackets with hanging pendant ornament support a heavy cornice with large modillions and an egg-and-dart molding. The 9th floor has large window openings framed in stone and divided by fluted pilasters carrying a smaller cornice. The top floor has tripartite window groups, with narrow windows flanking square center panes that are framed by projecting surrounds with rounded pediments. The ground floor on 47th Street is occupied by Exchange 58, Daniel Diamonds, and Larry's Fine Jewelers.
