Christie's Auction House (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / Rockefeller Plaza, 20
auction house, Art Deco (architecture), art museum / art gallery

The Christie's building features a grand limestone and bronze exterior with a post-industrial steel and glass canopy, complementing the existing murals, mosaics, and courtyard sculpture of Rockefeller Center in the heart of New York City. The 310,000-square-foot facility also includes a soaring triple-height entranceway with a specially commissioned mural by artist Sol LeWitt; a main saleroom with dramatic double-height ceilings and two smaller salerooms; adaptable walls to provide maximum exhibition space and expansive galleries for the display of large-scale contemporary works; and private viewing rooms. The 5-story wing spans between and connects the Simon & Schuster Building on the west with 10 Rockefeller Plaza on the east. On either side of the main entrance are double-height curved glass walls that continue to the east and west toward the far ends. These sections are topped by gardens, with the rest of the structure rising behind. The main entrance has four sets of bronze-and-glass doors, covered by a modern metal-and-glass canopy. Six tall, narrow windows top the entrances, with three projecting flagpoles between them.
