residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, Mediterranean Revival (architecture)
Estate home built c. 1917 in the Mediterranean Revival style for William Slocum Barstow, founder and president General Gas and Electric Co. The design which is theorized to have been by Addison Mizner but was likely Greville Rickard, utilized elements 16th century Lombard and Tuscan architecture. In the 1930's, Mrs. Barstow donated the land on Old Mill Road for the Women's Club of Great Neck to be built.
The estate was later purchased by Frederick William Irving Lundy {restauranteur} who was the proprietor of Lundy Brothers Restaurant in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn which was reported to be the largest in the country at the time. Lundy sold the home to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1975 to be used as a museum of maritime ephemera.
The house itself is set on a terraced level carved into a sloping hillside and overlooks the water, and the service buildings and garages, located farther up the hill, are approached from upper entrance levels. The main living room and music room spaces of the interior are parallel to the waterfront view and are separated from the dining and kitchen areas of the house by a central storage and service core, located behind the main stair. An elaborate 3-level stair and entry hall utilize the full height of the home.
The interiors of the house were lavishly decorated and many of the original installations are still there, such as unusual electric fittings for entertainment that include a push-button console for selecting musical pieces to be played on a automatic organ and a fully equipped cinema room in the basement. Also remaining are original murals by Faustino Sampietro and a grand Waterford chandelier. The addition of a music room designed by Greville Rickard was constructed in 1931 with woodwork by Irving & Casson - A. H. Davenport Co. The second floor hallway, interestingly, has a wall clad in Vitrolite glass.
