Mallakottai is the name of a panchayat village in the Sivagangai district in the Tamil Nadu state in southern India. 'Mallakottai' is believed to be a approximately 'beautiful fort'.

Mallakottai, also called "Mallai", is one of the small villages situated in the north part of the Sivaganga district in Tamil Nadu. Mallakottai's cultural heritage goes back 2500 years and the village has been known as one of the important commercial centres among the nearest villages. Some of the villages that surround Mallakottai are Jeyangondanilai or 'Jeyanilai', Vadavanpatti, Erumaipatti, Eriyur, and Kattanipatti. The principal occupation of villagers is farming. One of their popular deities is “Santhiveeran” and the “Santhiveeran Temple", located in the centre of the village, is a historic villagers temple with many stunning architectural works.
Eruthugattu is a major villagers festival and many legends are associated with it. It is surmised the festival dates back to the period before written history. ‘Eruthugattu’ is very enthusiastically celebrated for thirty continuous days and each day has its significance with a number of myths, legends and beliefs.
