Chatkhil Upazila (Noakhali district) with an area of 130.89 sq km, is bounded by Laksham and Shahrasti upazilas on the north, Lakshmipur sadar upazila on the south, Begumganj upazila on the east and Ramganj upazila on the west.

The location of the chatkhil town is 23.0608369N 90.9703082E. Chatkhil (Town) The town is now a municipality with an area of 6.07 sq. km and population 28817; male 48.45%, female 51.55%. It has 9 wards and 18 mahallas. Literacy rate among the town people is 54.8%.

Chatkhil thana was established in 1977 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of 9 union parishads, 113 mouzas and 136 villages.

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census: Population 194185; male 48.43%, female 51.57%; Muslim 96.23%, Hindu 3.75% and others 0.02%.

Religious institutions: Mosque 288, temple 12, most noted of which is Chatkhil Bazar Mosque.

Literacy and educational institutions: Average literacy 51.9%; male 55.2% and female 49.4%. Educational institutions: government college 1, non-government college 2, government high school 2, non-government high school 27, madrasa 15, government primary school 98, non-government primary school 35.

Main occupations: Agriculture 23.08%, agricultural labourer 16.07%, wage labourer 2.6%, commerce 13.6%, service 25.5%, transport 2.97%, construction 1.37% and others 14.81%.

Land use: Total cultivable land 9702.14 hectares; fallow land 1250.10 hectares; cultivable land under irrigation 82%.

Land control: Among the peasants 32.29% are landless, 28% small, 27% intermediate and 12.7% rich; cultivable land per head 0.5 hectare.
