The mainline of what was originally the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad crossed the Eastern Continental Divide at this spot 2620 feet (799 m) above sea level. To reach this point from the east, the railroad climbed a steep 17-mile grade from Bloomington on the Potomac River by following Savage River and then Crabtree Creek.
