Roe Island Lighthouse was built in 1891 and deactivated by the US Coast Guard in 1945. The buildings suffered damage from the Port Chicago Naval Magazine disaster. The explosion blew out all the windows, while a 20 to 30 foot high wave pushed the lighthouse 40 feet up the beach. It was sold to a family who used it as a summer home until it was completely destroyed by fire.
