During WWII this area was used as US army field camp as part of the extensive preparations for the D Day invasion. The 392nd Engineer General Regiment – a black African American regiment. Earthworks and foxholes still dot the area.

Located within this area are some Dartmoor kistvaens (burial tombs or cists) from the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age, i.e. from c 2500 BC to c 1500 BC; 2 stone circles; 4 Cairns and the Maximajor Stone monument are found on the western hill.
