The monument was designed by Swiss sculptor Richard Kissling between 1905-1907. Underneath lie the remains of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

  • This is officially Kilometer O. All points of Philippine surveys begin here. By the way, according to history, the original inhabitants of Manila transferred here from the Intramuros site when the Spaniards settled there, hence, "bagong bayan" or Bagumbayan. However, after the British invasion of Manila the Spanish military cleared the houses in Bagumbayan so that there may never be a sneak attack on Intramuros again.
  • Everytime I think back to my childhood I can always remember going to Rizal Park and looking up to the monument of the national hero of the Philippines, and he is also my national hero. Matagal na ako na hindi nakakapunta sa Rizal Park pero magbabalik bayan ako this year so I hope may chance ako na makapunta ulit sa Rizal Park.

  • All coordinates in the Philippines was taken from a small platform across this monument. The platform has a small silver ball and a sign "KM 0". If you use this monument as Kilometer zero, you will get an error already.
