grave, interesting place
William Henry McCarty, Jr., aka William H. Bonney, aka Billy the Kid is presumed to be buried in the cemetery at the site of Ft. Sumner, the place where Billy was arrested at the end of his notorious career.
First, it is presumed to be the place where Billy was buried, as there is some speculation that he may not have been killed here by Pat Garrett, as is widely rumored, but lived for many more years. Second, it is estimated that this particular spot is the grave but no one knows for sure as the head stone has been destroyed and stolen many time in the years since 1859. The original marker, as well as several subsequent markers were wood and were stolen and destroyed. As well, a flood washed away any further remnants of the exact spot.
In 1932 a headstone was erected at the "spot" commemorating the place where McCarty and two friends were buried and in 1940 a footstone was erected to McCarty alone. The last stone has been stolen and recovered several times and now is bolted in place, as well both markers are inside a locked cage.
