Uran is part of the Navi Mumbai city township lying in the Raigad district near Panvel and Karjat. It is situated east of Mumbai across the Dharamtar Creek, and is primarily a fishing village, which has developed into a special economy zone. Even famous for its salt pans later after the revolt by the salt pan owners against the decession of govt. has been acquired by the govt. to sea port which has proved now to be main source of income to most of the residents & all near by villages, as major projects & warehouses opened by giving good opportunities to the locals. It has ample industries, namely container terminals like JNPT, DP WORLD (ex P&O), APM terminals (ex GTI) and other shipping companies, GTPS, MSEB (Asia's first power plant run by gas) and ONGC
