30,000 people are buried on the grounds of Central State Hospital. Patients were buried in segregated cemeteries for white males, white females, "colored" males, and "colored" females.

Numbered stakes without names or other identifying information marked graves. Groundskeepers charged with cemetery upkeep often pulled up the grave markers, leaving them in piles in order to make lawn mowing less tedious. Restoration efforts began in 1997 & continue today.
