The area is inhabited by Desia Kondhs, Parajas, jhodias and other tribal communities. Baphalai Budhi is the reigning deity of the tribals of the area and is supposed to stay on top of the Baphlimali Plateau – a cairn of stones marks the place where Kondhs carry out prayers and sacrifices to appease her. Balplai Budhi is the central focus of the Kondh cosmology, and permeates the whole life and culture of the local tribals.
