This old section of Federal Highway 60-70 is now only accessible to off road vehicles and is the only visible section of the old two lane "Indio Grade" going from below sea level to over 1700 feet. Interstate 10 claims the current four lane highway; other than this small section from Coachella to Cactus City rest area at the summit, construction of the new road was done over the old one, alternating lanes as needed.
