The place is famous as the home of Temple Bar from 1889 to 2003. The Bar, one of the original gates into the City of London, was taken down stone by stone in 1878. In 1880 Sir Henry Meux, the brewer, bought the gate and re-built it as an entry to his estate. It remained largely forgotten until 1974, when the Temple Bar Trust was created to move it back to London. It was rebuilt in London in 2004, and now forms an entrance to Paternoster Square.
