Formally called simply Tosho-gu. One of the Tosho-gu Shinto shrines enshrining Tokugawa Ieyasu (Tosho Daigongen), the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate.
This shrine was established in 1621 by Tokugawa Yorifusa, the eleventh son of Ieyasu and the founder of the Mito branch of the Tokugawa family. Since 1936, Yorifusa has also been enshrined here.
