Kenchô-ji is one of gozan (五山, five great temples) of Kamakura, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. This Zen Buddhist temple was founded in 1249 by the Chinese monk Rankei Dôryû (Daigaku Zenji in Japanese) of the Rinzai sect, at the request of the Emperor Go-Fukakusa and completed in 1253.
Despite many fires over the centuries, Kanchô-ji has always been reconstructed in its original style.
