  • SVEADAL = [Swedish: "Swedish" + "Dale" or valley]. A private, rural Swedish cultural heritage and recreation center at 1,000 feet in the Santa Cruz mountains on the flanks of Loma Prieta. It is owned by the Swedish American Patriotic League (SAPL), a congress of Swedish organizations in the greater Bay Area. Sveadal annually hosts one of the nation's oldest Swedish Midsummer festivals on the Saturday nearest to June 21 (summer solstice), with maypole, program, and dancing. It has been visited by three generations of Swedish royalty, since 1927 when then Crown Prince and Princess Gustav Adolph VI visited to dedicate this preserve.
