The nine story, 144 room Howard Johnson's Oceans Edge Resort was constructed in 1958 and became a favorite of Spring Breakers in the 1960s. Damaged by Hurricane Wilma, the hotel was closed in 2005.
Initally it was planned to demolish the hotel and build a 20 story luxury hotel, but the development stalled due to concerns raised by neighbors and the economic climate. The most recent plan calls for a scaled down 18 story building with 170 condominium units, 60,500 sq. ft. of retail space, a 4,000 sq. ft. restaurant and a 1,000 sq. ft. bar.
