Southwestern University is a private selective four year university consisting of around 1200 students. Tracing its lineage from a charter granted to Rutersville College from the Republic of Texas in 1840, Southwestern lays claim to the title of the oldest institute of higher learning in Texas.
The university arrived in Georgetown in 1873 as "Texas University" and the continuation of four previous college charters granted to the Methodist Church, but relinquished this name to the state in 1875, choosing the current name.
Although it currently plays in the NCAA's Division III, it was a charter member of the Southwest Athletic Conference.
