This late prehistoric mound and village site, situated along the western side of the Des Plaines River, is affiliated with the Langford tradition of the Upper Mississippian, dating to around A.D. 1200-1500. Preservation of the site, now owned by the State of Illinois, is crucial in an area undergoing rapid development and loss of cultural resources.

  • This box is in the wrong place. The actual location of the Briscoe Mounds site is about .5 miles southwest on Front St., at: 41°25'10.17"N 88°13'13.13"W The IL DNR has a map floating around the net that DOES place the site where this box is, but it's incorrect. I found that out after tramping through that whole area, finding nothing, and talking to the Channahon Park District. The mounds were on private property for a long time (there's a barn almost on top of one of them) but are now owned by the IL Dept. of Natural Resources and accessible to the public. The coordinates I posted above are at a small parking lot the DNR has constructed for this site, with a small interpretive sign. The mounds are immediately to the east, in the mostly grassy field between the parking lot and the farm buildings, south side of Front St.
