The history of Lady's Well dates to medieval times. Long-standing undocumented history holds that 15 August 1249 (the Feast of the Assumption of Mary), Our Lady appeared at this location to Irish soldiers retreating in defeat from the Battle of Athenry. The source for this is likely the Dominicans at the priory in Athenry, which had been established in 1214; the order has been well-known for centuries for its Marian devotion. Lady's Well has been a noted place of pilgrimage for over 700 years.
