The only First Objective (on the O-1 line) actually reached by the end of D-Day, 19 February 1945. When the 1st and 3rd battalions of the 25th RCT (4th Division) landed on Beach Blue One at 9:00 a.m., their assignment was to take the Quarry (some 700 yards northeast of the landing zone) and the shore batteries, pillboxes, and other emplacements up on top. By 4:30 p.m. they had reached the base of the shear cliffs visible here. Capture of the fortifications above the Quarry would take another two days.
