Site of historic WWII battle between the Empire of Japan and the US Marine Corp, Feb 19, 1945 to Mar 16, 1945. 100,000 US military Troops fought 22,000 Japanese troops. The US military suffered 6,821 dead, 19,189 wounded and,494 missing while the Japanese fought almost to the last soldier with 21,853 dead. In June 2007 residents of the island asked that he island's name be changed back to it's pre-World War II name of Iwo To.

  • It should be noted that it is really supposed to be pronounced "Io (ee-oh) Jima". "Iwo" is common English usage, so I will not edit it.
