  • It was used as a temporary refuge in pre-colonial times. During both World Wars it was used for the internment of enemy aliens and 1942-44 it housed a heavy artillery battery. The island was later used as a quarentine station. The flora and fauna is now being allowed to revert back to its original state. Gulls nest on the island, kakariki (native parrots)and tuatara have been released there. Public access is by East West Ferry.
  • It may be of interest to note that four Wellington landmarks: Somes (Island); Ward (Island); Sinclair (Head) and Baring (Head) were all named for financiers of the NZ Company. Note the spelling of this island is Somes not Soames.
