This Third System coastal defense fortification was built between 1826 and 1838.
As of 1851, it was intended to be armed with twenty 32-pounder seacoast guns, thrity-two 24-pounder guns, two 18-pounder guns, two 12-pounder guns, three field pieces, twelve flank howitzers, eight 8" heavy seacoast howizters, two 8" light howitzers, one 13" mortar, three 10" heavy mortars and two coehorn mortars, for a total of 87 guns.
Seized by troops from Wilmington on April 16, 1861. Garrisoned by Confederate forces during the Civil War. Modified 1899 for modern concrete gun battery.

Bought in 1949 by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina after the Navy abandoned it after WWII. The restored fort is currently used as a retreat and campground for Christian organizations.
