Monad Shoal is the dive site which has put Malapascua Island on the diving map. Thousands of tourists travel to dive here because of thresher sharks, making the shoal a rare site for recreational divers, with minimal dive qualifications, to see deep water shark species in just 20 metres (66 feet) of water.
The common thresher shark (alopias vulpinus) and pelagic thresher shark (alopias pelagicus) are truly deep water sharks living in depths as deep as 350 metres (1,148 feet), so to see them in less than 20 metres of water would certainly seem to be a rarity.
