water, bay, invisible
One of the two most heavily mined areas in the entire Falklands until declared clear in 2010.
During the war, the Argentines correctly realized that any British amphibious operation to retake Stanley Airport could only take place at the beaches of Yorke Bay to the north of the airport or Surf Bay to the south, and would likely use both.
As a result, they placed over 1,000 «minimum metal» antipersonnel and anti-vehicle mines in the 8 acre area between Surf Bay and the airport. The British had to dig up 10 meters of sand dunes with armored mine clearing backhoes to recover them all since the mine detectors were useless.
