Second World War 1939-1945, ship wreck, battleship
The Mutsu was the sister ship of the battleship Nagato. These two were the only Japanese battleships to be armed with 16 inch guns. The Mutsu sunk as a result of an internal explosion in 1943. Her sister ship only saw one major action during the entire war, it was the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The Nagato survived the war and was subjected to tests in Operation Crossroads in 1946 which involved atomic bombs and what the effects on the ship might be. She survived ABLE with minor damage, but sunk as a result of BAKER five days after the end of this test.
