  • My father used to say that this area had mangroves and variety of wildlife. We are 10 km upstream from here. We probably have some relatives in this area. Sadly, the mangrove forests are gone. Who is running the shrimp culture here? I used to hear that some of the coastal inhabitants came from Bangladesh during the 1971 war. Where do they live? Did they take over the land? Without coastal mangroves and forest, you can imagine the loss through storm surges and tsunami. The older villages are located on high ground away from the shore. Correct? What is the major occupation for folks here? Are there enough jobs around for young men and women?
  • Some land has been alloted to the Bangladeshi settlers. Much has been usurped by them. The major occupation of the people here is agriculture, fishing and salt making. Which is that 10 KMs upstream you hail from?
  • We are doing a study here. It is untrue that 'Bengali settlers' have 'ursurped' much of the land. All the land has been overtaken and is being used by people, Oriya and Bengali. As a matter of fact, the area highlighted here is on the whole not owned by local people (Oriya or Bengali) and some Oriyas told us it has been bought by outsiders from Talcher, Bhubaneswar, Tirtol, Kujang, Jagatsinghpur. Some industrialist has 20 acres, and even the Agricultural Minister Damodar Rout's family have apparently bought some. So this partly answers the original question on who is running the shrimp culture here. Bengalis have been coming to this region since British times, around Indian independence (invited by MK Gandhi) and Bangladeshi independence (invited by Indira Gandhi), I think, but this needs verification. What this shows is that we should not publish unauthenticated information on the web to spread false propaganda.
