memorial, column, interesting place, lookout tower
Built to commemorate the 1864 triumph of Prussia over Denmark, it was originally located in front of the Reichstag on the Königsplatz (now the Platz der Republik).
During the Nazi era it was moved here by Albert Speer in preparation for Hitler's rebuilding of Berlin as the new capital city "Germania". At that time an additional drum was added in the middle to increase its height and a series of pedestrian tunnels were constructed under the street linking it to the Tiergarten.
The inhabitants of Berlin call it "Goldelse"
