Ancient Palairos

The approximate extent of the ancient city of Palairos, which was located at what is now called Kekropoula (or Kechropoula). The site has yielded remains dating back to the Mycenaean period. Proof of this are the walls of the city from the second millennium BC. The construction of the walls alternated between trapezoid and polygonal blocks, parts of them belong to different periods. The port of ancient Palairos was at modern Pogonia, in the southeastern part of the peninsula, where remains of port facilities have been found east of the village. In the hilly center of the peninsula of slope position is located the Sterna fortress. The name Palairos is now carried by the town of Zaverda, located some 7 km across the plain to the southeast.
