The city of Liverpool is the largest coastal settlement in the UK. For a long time since 1207 it was a small place, but it grew up as a port during the 17th century; during this time it was besieged during the civil war. It now has a modern history of 1960s youth culture, including music groups such as The Beatles, but suffered unemployment problems during the 1980s. Recently, regeneration has been doing well and the city won a bid for the 'European Capital of Culture 2008'. People from Liverpool are often nicknamed 'scousers', named after Scouse, which is a local stew. The official term in 'Liverpudlian'. In Welsh it is known as Lerpwl.
